Fishery Socio Economics of Valaichchenai Lagoon, Sri Lanka

Valaichchenai lagoon is one of the major inland fishery sources in Batticaloa. However, status & socio-economic information were lacking literature, and this study aimed to fulfil research gap. Primary data including fishing practices, species, marketing system supply chain, catch per unit effort, sustainable constraints, environmental impacts related activities, collected using questionnaire, interviews, direct field observations. Secondary obtained from Fisheries Department Batticaloa journal articles. Total 12 types gears outrigger canoes (Thoni) used for 38 species identified during period. Only a very small percentage directly sells fish final consumers, chain includes local foreign market interventions. Fishermen caught 0.009 0.027 kg/net square meter-day, 0.75 3.1 kg/day gill net cast respectively, on average. Regulations mesh sizes certain unauthorized licensing system, seabass cage culture fisheries have been imposed lagoon, but there no species/size limitations, off-season/time limitations with prevailing irresponsible (IUU), seagrass/benthic environment destruction, shrimp farm effluent discharge, disposal harbour adjacent bout repairing centres, oil spilling boats sound pollution issues. It can be suggested that introducing co-management implementing voluntary code conduct, proper rules regulations, frequent monitoring, conducting awareness programmes training sustainability fishery.
